The approach to history at the Old School is very much "hands on", using a range of visits, model making and simulations to bring each period under study to life.
Following foundation work in Reception and Year 1, where concepts of time and the past are explored, in Year 2 pupils study the Victorians and the Romans. Both of these topics are enhanced by visits to museums and historical sites such as the Time and Tide Museum in Great Yarmouth, Beccles Museum and Colchester Castle.
In Year 3, the main topic is the Anglo Saxons. Local sites of interest include the Anglo Saxon Village at West Stow and the burial chambers at Sutton Hoo. The topic is brought to life with mask making and a longship regatta in which the children have the opportunity to improve, if they can, on the Viking rig.
Th Egyptians provide the focus for work in Year 4. The shaduf provides a fitting subject for some CDT and canopic jars and scarab beetles often feature in art or pottery lessons during this year. A visit to the excellent Egyptian galleries in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge provides opportunity to study some impressive genuine artifacts of the period.
In Years 5 and 6 the work becomes a little more academic. The Tudors and Stuarts are studied in Year 5 and the Rise of Nazi Germany in Year 6.
