Art at the Old School

Academic structure

At The Old School we believe children should be given the opportunity to express and develop their inherent creativity, using hands, eyes and personality, finding enjoyment and personal satisfaction in the process. They should be encouraged to find beauty and interest in the world around them, and to appreciate the place of design in all things. In particular we believe that the study and practice of art should enable children to:
Develop observational skills
Develop an appreciation and further understanding of the world around us, including both natural and manmade objects
Develop spiritual values
Develop an interest and appreciation of the work and talent of others
Use art as a means of communication and learning to represent observations, ideas and feelings through art.
Use and develop the imagination.
Experience a wide range of work to including drawing, painting, printing, model-making, collage, weaving, sewing, clay, origami, learning about colour and pattern, line and tone, shape, form and space, texture, perspective, studying the work of great artists both historical and contemporary including multi-cultural and ethnic work, looking at the work of contemporary craftsman and women both in the locality and further afield.
Visits to galleries, exhibitions and historical sites feature regularly on the timetable though more specifically for the older children. Visits and workshops by local artists are also organised.
We are lucky to have two rooms designated specifically for art. A large, well-lit and airy room specifically equipped for art and also a Pottery complete with electric kiln and wheels.
